Athlone recorded their first championship win of the season on Sunday last against a tough and spirited Tryellspass team. Athlone found themselves a goal down in the opening five minutes through sloppy defending but fought back bravely through great scores from Seamus Mitchell, Joe Fallon, Tom Stuart Trainor and Neil Dolan to find themselves a point to the good at half time. Playing with the breeze in the second half Athlone piled on the pressure but kicked numerous balls wide before recording our first score of the half through a Neil Dolan free. Tyrellspass dominated the final quarter of the game and it took great defending from Philip Allen, Oliver Keating and James Kilroy to keep their potent attack at bay. Both teams swapped scores until the final few minutes when Joe Fallon steppend up to kick two 45 metre frees over the bar to send Athlone into the lead which they held until the final whistle.
